Accoya creates a giant beehive structure in the Netherlands

 Tuesday, November 10, 2015

accoya logoAccoya wood has been used for a giant beehive structure, also known as a melarium, which is designed as an art structure and centre to be used and enjoyed by the public, scientists, beekeepers and bees. The structure contains nine beehives. In total, 14m3 of Accoya was used for the melarium, which comes from the Latin name for honey. A significant proportion of Accoya was used as a sheet pile wall in front of a steel frame. The Accoya was then perforated with over 3000, 50mm round holes, which represent the lenses of a bee’s eye.

The building, based in central Delft, was commissioned by the province of South Holland in north-western Netherlands. The beehive is now a key landmark within the surrounding countryside and

it’s hoped that it will encourage communication and participation by the local community.

The project’s designer, David Veldhoen explains more, “Accoya was the only choice for us. With no requirement for ongoing maintenance it means that there is no need for any regular application of paint or wood treatments. The wood itself naturally repels fungus and rot and is indigestible to most insects. The unusual shape meant that we needed a versatile product, and Accoya was the only product able to achieve this.”

Laura Ladd, head of marketing for Accsys Technologies said of the project,

“The Accoya melarium is one of the more unique projects that we have seen Accoya specified for. Accoya is long lasting and dimensionally stable, allowing it to fit easily with the steel frame. Accoya was the only viable choice of wood for this development and was more suitable than tropical hardwood. The final effect is very impressive and perfectly demonstrates what can be done with Accoya.”
